OK, so my life can get kinda crazy. But, it’s a blessing to visit so many places and meet so many incredible people. The cool thing about “social media” is it lets me share stories and experiences with fans, friends and anyone with a soft spot for easily excited artist-carpenter-designer-showhost types. So, check out the various sites and be sure to sign up for the newsletter for tips, ideas and more!

My design work on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition is always inspired by the stories of the individual families we help. I wanted to know about YOUR inspired home improvement project! We received lots of great stories and ideas from our “What Inspires You” contest and Mindy from Avon Lake, Ohio, is our first winner. Mindy was inspired by the birth of her daughter to create a fun and stylish nursery.
“I wanted a room color that was calming, but I didn’t want to use the typical pink for girls. I wanted the room to be fun and kid-friendly, but stylish and appealing to the adult eye, too. I chose to paint the focal wall with horizontal blue, brown and cream-colored stripes for a fun yet clean and modern look.
I also wanted a room that could grow as my daughter grew. Furniture choices included a changing table that converts to a dresser and a crib that converts to a full-size bed. I painted an old nightstand and added new hardware to match my late grandfather’s favorite black leather recliner. The chair is very sentimental to me and perfect for rocking my daughter to sleep.
While I wanted a room design that was gender neutral so we could use it for the next baby, I still wanted feminine touches. I added these to the room by choosing colorful accessories and decorations including wall art, lampshades and flower vases. My daughter loves her room and I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. Beautiful and functional!”
TY'S TAKE:
I couldn’t agree more, Mindy. I love the blue and brown. Those colors are not only current but classic. And gender neutral just makes good sense. Your furniture choices are versatile, but I really like that you’ve included a personal element. Sitting in the recliner with your daughter is like having your grandfather give you both a hug!
You also hit on one of the easiest and cheapest ways to make something old look new again: a coat of paint and new hardware on a piece of sturdy furniture. Your color scheme and design choices would work well in just about any room.
Thanks to everyone who shared their ideas and inspirations. And congrats to Mindy for winning a $25 Sears gift certificate!
